Common Mold Types in Homes

Which mold types are most commonly found in homes? How dangerous are they? Which ones are harder to remove than others?

Identifying Mold in Your Home

There are over 100,000 mold species. Some are toxic while others don’t present that big of a threat.

However, to someone who doesn’t know a lot about molds, most of them look the same, and when you have mold in your home, the only thing you care about is getting rid of it. You don’t really care about becoming a mold expert.

But it’s important to educate yourself at least a little bit so that you don’t accidentally expose yourself to some of the very dangerous mold species. This article will help.

So, out of all mold types, which ones are most commonly found in homes?

We’ll present their names and some key facts you need to know like, for example, the cost of removal (by hiring a professional).

DISCLAIMER: These stats HIGHLY vary depending on your individual situation. For example, the cost of removal doesn’t just depend on the mold type itself but on other factors as well. Another example, health effects highly vary as well. We also don’t know the level of mold infestation you might be experiencing. Take these stats with a grain of salt!

Also, do your own research on each of the listed mold species below.

We’ll firstly list the most dangerous and toxic species and then the less problematic ones.

  • Aspergillus

Danger level: High

Average cost of removal: $1,500 – $5,000

Mostly grows on: Stored food, houseplants, air conditioners/ventilation systems

Color: Varies, can be of pretty much any color

Health effects:

Less severe – Headaches, abdominal pain, diarrhea

More severe – Lung bleeding, brain abscess, death

Note: Aspergillus consists of over 185 different types of mold. This is why it can be of pretty much any color. Most species of Aspergillus will not harm you as much but certain species can be hazardous, and can even kill a human in the most severe cases.

  • Stachybotrys – The Black Mold

Danger level: High

Average cost of removal: $2,000 – $6,000

Mostly grows on: Cellulose material

Color: Black/Dark Green

Health effects:

Less severe – Headaches, coughing, chronic fatigue

More severe – Memory loss, lung damage, neurological problems like depression, anxiety, and hallucinations

Note: Especially dangerous for children. Black Mold is one of the most difficult mold types to be removed.

  • Chaetomium

Danger level: High

Average cost of removal: $500 – $3,500

Mostly grows on: Water-damaged parts of properties. Mostly basements and attics.

Color: Mostly brown

Health effects:

Less severe – General signs of allergy

More severe – Neurological damage, seizures, asthma

Note: Chaetomium can often be found hand-in-hand with The Black Mold. Removing the moisture source is critical for preventing this mold from growing in your property again.

Aspergillus, Stachybotrys, and Chaetomium are considered the three most dangerous mold types. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to spot them in homes. If you suspect you have one (or more) of them in your home, immediately call a professional.

  • Penicillium

Danger level: Medium

Average cost of removal: $1,500 – $5,000

Mostly grows on: Furniture/Wood

Color: Blue/Green

Health effects:

Less severe – Coughing, sneezing, itchy skin, headaches

More severe – Asthma, respiratory problems

Note: Although widely used in the medicine and food industry, Penicillium can be problematic if found in homes. Some species could potentially be very toxic.

  • Alternaria

Danger level: Medium/Low

Average cost of removal: $1,500 – $5,000

Mostly grows on: Damp surfaces

Color: Dark Brown/Grey

Health effects:

Less severe – Minor allergic reactions

More severe – Asthma

Note: Alternaria can spread very quickly once it finds its way into the home. However, it’s not as toxic as some of the types listed above.
