How to Clean Mold from Roof

Mold is a problem that many of us have to deal with in some form or another. As long as we clean our home every week than it shouldn’t be that big a deal. At least on the inside of the home.

First, learn if you can remove the mold yourself or if you need a professional to assist you. Not all mold problems are the same and therefore you should educate yourself on when you can perform the mold removal yourself and when you need professional assistance. 

Homeowners will often forget to maintain the exterior of the home. If they were to go up on the roof you might find a ton of black smudges of mold all over it.

Spray the bushes and plants on the ground close to the home with water. This will help to protect them as much as you can from the cleaning solutions that will be dripping from the roof.

Combine one part bleach with three parts lukewarm water. Use a pump sprayer to apply it to the mold on the roof. Also add a bit of tri-sodium phosphate. This will be used to help clean off the dirt and stains on the roof and give it an extra cleaning.

Allow both of the cleaning solutions to set for fifteen minutes before you rinse it off using a garden hose. Run your hand over the area to see if there is any mold left behind. The area will feel slimy and wet if more has been left behind.

If there is more mold than you thought and not all of it was removed than you should use apply more cleaning solution to it. Scrub the area with a hard bristled broom as much as you can to remove it all. Rinse it off again with the water hose.

Cut away low hanging tree branches. You want the sunshine to hit as much of the roof as possible. This will help it to dry once you have cleaned it and will help to prevent the problem from reoccurring in the near future.

Another great way to prevent mold from growing on the roof is to install zinc strips under a row of shingled close to the ridge of the roof. This will create a mild chemical reaction by the rainwater when it hit’s the roof.
