How to Remove Bathroom Mold
Struggling with stubborn and annoying bathroom mold? In this guide, you’ll learn how to remove the mold from your bathroom and also prevent it from appearing again!
Removing the Mold
One of the most common, if not the most common issue that people struggle with within their homes is mold between the tiles in their bathroom, usually in the shower.
This is a type of problem that’s usually pretty minor and it doesn’t require emergency intervention. Usually, it also doesn’t bring any health risks.
However, the one thing most people know about mold is that it can grow and expand pretty quickly.
And if the problem grows out of hand (property damage, health problems), you’ll probably need to hire a mold contractor to remove mold for you.
You probably don’t want to experience something like that which is why you need to act on time. Let’s now quickly cover the DIY shower mold removal guide.
Budget: ~$50
Time: Depends on the severity of the issue. Anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
Result: Prevented mold infestation and property damage.
Okay, so let’s go!
- Preparations
The only items you’ll really need are a cleaner and vinegar for killing mold spores. For a cleaner, you can get pretty much any product from RMR or Clorox. We recommend RMR 141 Disinfectant.
As for vinegar, you should be just fine with white vinegar as it kills most mold spores. However, if you believe you need a stronger type, get a cleaning vinegar.
Any product from Heinz won’t be a mistake. They have tons of great reviews. We recommend Heinz All Natural White Vinegar 1 Gal.
You’ll be using the cleaner to remove the mold and then vinegar to kill mold spores that have caused the mold to grow.
Optional: Home Mold DIY Test Kit.
In case you’re more concerned about the type of mold you have, you can either have a professional inspect your home or do it yourself. Do this before you start cleaning.
- Cleaning
Spray the mold, grab a sponge and start cleaning. Do this for some time and you should see some results.
Note: Certain mold species are more difficult to remove than others. Use an item like a scrub brush to remove stubborn mold.
- Kill the mold
Spray vinegar to the area and leave it for about an hour. This will give vinegar enough time to get to the mold’s roots.
Some mold species can survive cleaning with vinegar. However, in most cases, it should do the job.
Be careful when using vinegar. You probably want to use some cleaning equipment.
Note: Be careful when using vinegar. You probably want to use some cleaning safety equipment.
- Rinse and repeat
After enough time has passed, you can rinse the area with water. If vinegar isn’t enough, you can mix baking soda with water and do some more scrubbing.
Once you’re done, spray the vinegar onto the area again.
That’s it! For most people, this process shouldn’t take too long to produce results. Just make sure to apply the steps mentioned below to prevent mold from growing again.
Preventing the Mold from Appearing Again
After successful cleaning, it’s still not over. You need to constantly take care of your bathroom so that it stays clean and mold-free.
- After every hot shower or bath, open up a window so that hot and humid air can quickly get out. Also, wipe your floor and walls dry.
- Add a ventilation fan if you don’t already have one.
- Clean your bathroom regularly.
Following these steps will help keep mold away.
However, some mold problems are too big to be dealt with by just one person with no equipment.
