Can I Re-use Items Affected by Mold?
Very common question. Hear our take on this issue in this article.
Our Answer
It depends.
If the item is porous, mold can penetrate through its structure and weaken the item.
You may be able to save money on replacements by cleaning and reusing. Nonporous items (such as metals, glass, or hard plastics) that still are structurally sound but visibly moldy can be cleaned and reused provided they are thoroughly cleaned with a solution of hot water with detergent or non-ammonia soap. Some porous items such as stuffed toys, foam cushions, and bedding can be cleaned and donated if they are still in good shape.
In most cases, you can treat items with a mixture of one part liquid chlorine bleach to nine parts water. That is approximately 3 cups of bleach for every 2 gallons of water. Do not use straight bleach. Mix the solution in a well-ventilated area such as a laundry room or outdoors. If using outdoors, please be sure any runoff will not damage plants or cause pollution.
If you discover mold on hard surfaces, like wood or concrete, the cleaning process is the following. Remove any loose mold using a sponge or scouring pad. Use a cleaner formulated to kill mold and mildew to wipe out the remaining growth.
Before you start cleaning any moldy item, carefully read the instructions on the label of the product you are using. Protect yourself before you begin by wearing a respirator with organic vapor/P100 cartridge filters, waterproof gloves, goggles and coveralls.
Never try to clean and treat items at the same time, and never mix bleach with ammonia — it can create dangerous fumes.
If in doubt of the item being able to be reused, just throw it away.
If the contaminated area is not small, you should use a professional mold remediation surface.
Conclusion
Can I recondition and re-use items affected by mold? The answer is yes — provided that all materials are thoroughly cleaned and visibly free from mold. It is important to check the items from time to time to make sure that mold does not reappear.
