Mold vs Mildew
What is the difference between mold and mildew? Which is more dangerous than the other?
What are Mold and Mildew
What is mold
Mold is a fungus, like yeasts and mushrooms. It grows on organic surfaces, in presence of moisture and oxygen. Its color is usually dark or green.
Some molds can produce toxins and can cause harm to humans (mostly to the respiratory system). However, most of them won’t cause you too many health problems but they can attack your food and other items made of organic material like f.e. wallpapers, cardboards, etc.
Mold finds its way to homes through the air. Mold spores travel through the air constantly and it is extremely difficult to prevent them from entering your home permanently.
One of the most common mold types found in homes is black mold. This mold type is very stubborn and difficult to remove. Removing the mold types like this one usually requires professional assistance.
What is mildew
Mildew is a type of mold, meaning that it also needs moisture to grow. Its color is mostly white or yellow at the start and when it grows, the color gets darker.
It can also be harmful both to your health and your property.
Differences Between
Mold and Mildew
The main differences are in growth and color.
Mold grows in a form of a long and branched structure, known as hypha. On the other hand, mildew usually grows flat and appears thin.
Their colors are also different, as we mentioned in the previous paragraph. Molds are usually black or green while mildew is white or yellow.
Conclusion
Despite certain differences, both mold and mildew can grow into a big problem.
